French press (press pot) is one of our favorite ways to make coffee. It is cost-effective, easy to use, and makes an extremely delicious cup of coffee. We prefer a slightly finer grind (anywhere from a medium coarse to a medium drip) and a quicker brew, resulting in a very sweet and clear cup with exquisite complexity.
You Will Need:
- Coffee grinder, ideally a burr grinder (set to medium coarse grind)
- Press pot
- Fresh roasted coffee
- Timer
- Filtered water
- A gram scale or tablespoon (for measuring coffee)
- Digital thermometer (optional)
- Spoon
- Thermos
Step One: Preheat
First, clean your French press, being attentive to remove ALL the oils that build up on the metal and glass. Now pour a few cups of very hot water inside the press to both pre-heat the cylinder and clean the pot one more time before adding coffee.
Step Two: Grind Coffee
Use 8 to 10 grams of coffee per 6 ounces of water, which equals roughly two rounded tablespoons of coffee. This is just a reference point. When making future pots adjust the amount of coffee used to personal taste -- more coffee for a stronger cup and less for a milder cup. Grind just enough coffee for each use, and try to minimize time between grinding and brewing. If you don't have a grinder, buy one! Even an inexpensive blade grinder is better than pre-ground beans.
Step Three: Add Water
Set your timer for three to four minutes and add 205 degree water. If you don't have a thermometer, bring the water to a boil and then let it rest for a minute before adding.
Step Four: Stir and Steep
After adding water, wait one minute, then stir up the grounds and add more water to the pot as needed. Put the lid back on the pot to contain the heat.
Step Five: Strain
After three to four minutes, press the filter down slowly and then pour your coffee and put the remainder into a thermos. Coffee left in the pot after plunging will get overextracted, resulting in a bitter brew.
