The Dukunde Kawa cooperative produces one of the most thrilling coffees in all of Rwanda. There are 2,034 members who are clustered in the lush hills surrounding the town of Musasa. Over eighty percent of the cooperative's members are female. In the 2010 Cup of Excellence competition, the 2nd as well as the 7th place lots both came from this cooperative. Dukunde Kawa is part of a network of cooperatives assisted by the US-sponsored PEARL program, which does lots of work helping Rwanda's small-scale coffee farmers to rebuild their production in the wake of the 1994 genocide and the 1990s world coffee crash.
